FAQ

I know that choosing to come to therapy can feel like a big decision. I've tried answering a few of the common questions clients ask me to help you feel more at ease.

If I haven't answered your question, bring it along to our introductory call or to your first session.

1 / What is person-centred therapy?

It's a type of talking therapy (also known as counselling) developed by renowned psychologist Carl Rogers. It forms the basis of many modern therapies today with its principles around the client (i.e. you) being the expert in their own lives. A person-centred therapist won't tell you how to live your life because they are not you. Instead, as your therapist, I want you to have the confidence and autonomy to live your life your way. I'll do everything I can to support you on that journey.

2 / Is therapy confidential?

Yes. I won't share what you tell me unless there is a significant and immediate risk of harm to yourself or someone else, or when required to by law. We'll discuss this in our first session.

3 / Can you help me with my specific problem?

I've undertaken years of training, and constantly top-up that training, so that I can support my clients with a wide range of topics and problems. When we have our 20-minute introductory call, we can discuss your reasons for coming to therapy. We can then decide if I'm the best fit for you.

4 / Do I need to come prepared?

If you'd like to, but there's no obligation to do so. You don't need to fill every minute of your therapy session with your voice. Sometimes, we might do something creative to relax you or get you thinking. Other times, you might just want a bit of silence. There is no set way to 'do' person-centred therapy - it's adapted to suit you and your needs.

5 / How long does therapy last for?

Sessions themselves are 60 minutes, but as for the number of sessions: as many as you need. You might have a set number in mind, or you might want to keep having sessions until you feel ready to finish. I provide both short-term and long-term therapy. We'll have regular check-ins to ensure it's working for you, and to discuss when the right time would be to end.

6 / Will therapy make me feel better?

Hopefully! The goal of therapy is to improve your wellbeing and your understanding of yourself. However, that doesn't mean therapy is always sunshine and rainbows. Sometimes it's hard. Sometimes it's uncomfortable. Sometimes it's upsetting. Growth doesn't always make us feel great (trust me!) But I will actively support you in sessions so that you feel safe enough to head back out into the real world, even if that session has brought up some uncomfortable or challenging emotions.
