3 things that run through my mind as a therapist when you tell me you don't like yourself

What has happened to make you believe that? Was it the home you grew up in? Things that happened in school? Difficult relationships? We’re not born disliking ourselves, so these feelings and thoughts will have come from somewhere - let’s try and uncover the roots.
What purpose do these thoughts serve? Does disliking yourself keep you safe from harm, from social ridicule, from risking being hurt by others? And let’s not judge or hate ourselves for thinking this way either - you’re already hurting enough without adding more self-loathing on top.
What would life look like if you liked yourself? What possibilities might then open up for you? How would you feel? The authentic you is in there somewhere.
Low self-worth and self-esteem are two things many of my clients struggle with. Whenever my clients share with me that they don’t like themselves, we approach this feeling with curiosity and care; looking for a root cause, understanding how you feel with compassion, and then building your self-worth up together, block by block.
It’s not a quick process. Years of low self-worth can’t be healed overnight. But it doesn’t mean that it’s impossible to change the way you feel about yourself. You might just need the right person - the right therapist - to support you on your journey, someone ready to delve into the choppy waters with you and help guide you to shore.
If you think that could be me, you can get in touch for a free 20-minute consultation to see how I might be able to support you with therapy for low self-esteem and low self-worth.
